Printing's Past
Panel DiscussionJoin me leading an all-women panel to discuss the history and future of women in print, as well as the status of printmaking in the wider Artistic World. The panel included WCPF Chief Curator Lizzie Glendinning and WCPF artists Jen Moore, Yoonjung Shim, Kristina Chan and Amy-Jane Blackhall.
We all know the technical and physical demands of printmaking. Even today, men are considered broadly to have a monopoly over this profession and creative venture, but history and the present day tell a different story. When we think of printing, we might picture a gritty printing room, dominated by men over the centuries, but this panel will prove that that is not the case.
Printmaking, also, has long been overshadowed by the painted picture, or sculptural work. Instagram is saturated with platforms supporting the arts, but few dedicated solely to printmaking. Printmaking is as fine an art as any other, taking extreme patience, care, skill and time. A largely collaborative process, we will explore the reasons behind this shift from dominated by male printmakers to women, the history and commerciality of printmaking, and the ideas and notions behind this ‘underdog’ of the art world.
